BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 17 goals in a 17-3 win over the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds Friday at LIU Field.
Senior Caitlin Delaney tied a career-high with eight points on five goals and three assists. She also had three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Delaney last had five goals and three assists in a win at UMass Lowell last season. Averi Farhat had five points on three goals and two assists. Liana Doyle also had a hat trick, adding three caused turnovers, two groundballs, and an assist.
Sacred Heart (4-8, 2-1 NEC) opened the game with four goals in the first 10 minutes. Doyle scored on a free-position shot 1:05 into the game. Twenty seconds later, Alyssa Pearce scored with an assist from Delaney to make the score 2-0. Delaney then scored her first goal at the 25:47 mark to extend the lead to 3-0, with Farhat capping the run with a free position goal with 20:10 left in the half.
The Pioneers had another four-goal run in the first half, started by a Hanna Wise goal at the 11:17 mark. Delaney, Farhat, and Erin Coutts also scored to give SHU an 8-1 lead with 5:46 to play in the first. LIU Brooklyn (2-9, 0-3 NEC) was able to cut the deficit to six, 9-3, at halftime after goals by Jenn Peters and Dale Cosgrave. SHU dominated the second half, outscoring the Blackbirds 8-0 and outshooting LIU Brooklyn 20-3. Delaney had four points in the second half on two goals and two assists. Paige DeVine had a pair of assists in the half as well.
SHU outshot LIU Brooklyn 37-11 in the game and held a 25-20 advantage in groundballs. Paige Hammick needed to make just three saves for the win. The Pioneers forced 26 turnovers while committing only 14.
The Pioneers continue their current road swing next Friday, April 21, at Wagner. Game time is 3 p.m.
