HAMDEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team went up by two early and despite a Quinnipiac rally, managed to knot things up in the second half's early going. However, the Bobcats (3-2) got behind a 4-1 run to put the Pioneers (0-4) away, 11-8, Saturday afternoon at QU Lacrosse Stadium.
How it happened…
Quinnipiac got on the board first with less than three minutes played but the Pioneers answered and displayed hints of early control rattling off three-straight goals to work up a 3-1 lead at 13:40 of the first half. Carrie Speicher, Taylor Sweeney, and Sydney Ericson found the net during the outpour.
The Bobcats began to click silencing the visitors for about five minutes while mounting on four tallies of their own for a 5-3 advantage with over eight minutes left in the window. Hanna Wise put a stop to QU's flurry at 7:45. The host added another pair of goals before Nicole Holder just beat the halftime horn sailing her attempt through everyone with two ticks pictured on the clock, 7-5.
Wise's aggression awarded her a free position attempt and she converted as SHU trailed just one at 19:35. Alyssa Pearce deadlocked the score at 7-up creating her own shot but it would be the only Pioneers' tally in a near ten-minute span while the hosts tagged on three more goals, 10-7.
Both teams traded goals within two minutes of one another including Pearce's goal that wrapped up SHU's scoring. Allison Kuhn's try at 3:05 concluded scoring for good.
Pearce and Wise put up two goals each.
Dominique Anselmin's seven draw controls matched Quinnipiac's mark as a team as she led on the evening.
Elizabeth Small picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover without committing one.
Taylor Sweeney directed the offense handing out a pair of assists.
Paige Hammick recorded seven saves while facing 18 shots.
- Quinnipiac's three-point win is the smallest margin of victory against the Pioneers this season.
The Pioneers head to Winthrop Thursday, March 8 for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
