Sacred Heart Falls Short Against Rival Stags, 13-10

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 6, 2010) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team got three goals apiece from seniors Jackie Pierce (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) but fell short against the cross-town rival Fairfield Stags, 13-10. The Stags outshot the Pioneers 40-19 as they remain perfect on the young season at 3-0. The Pioneers, who opened a four-game homestand on Saturday, fall to 2-3 on the year.
The Pioneers took an early 3-1 lead in the games first eight minutes. Senior Cori Horelik (South Windsor, CT) opened the scoring at 27:09 off a feed from Hauser. An 8meter Hauser goal and a sophomore Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) marker put SHU up 3-1 with 22:22 on the clock.
The Stags, led by Kristen Coleman, put together a 7-0 run the rest of the half to take control of the game. Coleman scored two of her team-high four goals during the rally and also set up teammate Katie MacKay for a goal. Brittany Bare and Caitlin Young scored on back-to-back goals just 13 seconds apart to put Fairfield up 8-3 at the half.
Hauser opened the second half ending the run just 22 seconds in, burying a feed from Horelik. The Stags ran their lead to 10-4 before the Pioneers pieced together a three-goal rally. Hauser, Farra Coppola and Pierce all scored within a span of 1:13 to pull SHU within 10-7 with 18:41 left.
Fairfield scored three of the next four goals over the next five minutes to take back control. Caitlin Young hit at 17:13 and put her team up 13-8 with 13:41 left. Pierce scored two-straight in the final minutes but the Pioneers couldn't complete the comeback.
Hauser added a season-high four assists to her three goals and also had three draw wins. Kmiotek scored a pair and assisted on another. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) finished with a season-best 19 saves in the loss.
SHU remains at home to play host to the UConn Huskies next Saturday, March 13th at 1:00 pm.
