FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 5, 2010) - Sacred Heart senior Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Co-Defensive Player of the Week announced by the league office on Monday. Wagner shares the award this week with Quinnipiac's Kaitlyn Kelly.
Wagner takes home her second NEC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season and fifth of her career after she turned back 24 shots and allowed just 12 goals as Sacred Heart remained perfect in league play (6-0) with two conference victories last week. Wagner notched 11 saves, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and kept Mount St. Mary's off the scoreboard for the last 15:36 of regulation and all of overtime in a 9-7 win on Thursday. In an 8-5 triumph over Monmouth two days later, Wagner made 10 of her 13 saves in the second half and did not allow a goal the final 21:47 of the contest. She turned away six Monmouth free position attempts and also recorded four ground balls and a caused turnover in the victory. The senior goalie has not yielded more the eight goals in any NEC game this season and sports a league-leading 5.70 goals against average against conference rivals. Wagner, who hails from Aurora, CO, also ranks first in the conference in overall GAA (8.44) and save percentage (.579).
Wagner and the Pioneers will head to Saint Francis (PA) on Thursday and Robert Morris on Sunday.
