Nicoleta Mantescu Named SHU Women's Rowing Coach
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart
University Executive Director of Athletics C. Donald Cook has
announced the hiring of Nicoleta Mantescu as head coach for women's
Mantescu joins the Sacred Heart Athletic Department following a ten year run as the Director of Rowing at the Saugatuck Rowing Club, in Westport. There she coached men's and women's competitive rowers and was responsible for designing and implementing conditioning plans as well as clinical curriculum.
Beginning in 2006, and ending in 2009, Mantescu also filled the role of general manager at the Saugatuck Rowing Club. From 1995-2000 she served as a head coach for the Saugatuck Rowing Association. In that span, she increased adult novice and junior programs from 17 to 70.
Under her guidence, the Saugatuck Rowing club has won six
National Championship titles over the last seve years (2010, 2009,
2007, 2006, 2005, 2004). She has led the team to eight
Northeast Regional Championships (1997, 2003 through 2009) and put
together gold medal crews at the Head of the Charles Regatta in
1997, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2006.
Mantescu began her professional coaching career in 1986 as an assistant coach for the Olympia Bucharest Rowing Club. In 1989, she took over as the head coach for the Romanian Senior B National Team. At the 1992 Summer Olympics, in Barcelona, Mantescu's men's 4+ team won the gold medal.
Following her stint with the Romanian national team, Mantescu
spent three years as the Assistant Director of Rowing for the
Romanian Rowing Federation.
