Fairfield, CT.—The Sacred Heart Women's Soccer Team prevailed over Fairleigh Dickinson Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win on a misty and overcast Campus Field. The Pioneers improve their Northeast Conference record to 3-2-1 on the year and 7-4-3 overall with the win. The Knights drop to 1-5 against NEC opponents and 4-8-1 overall.
The teams combined for 11 shots in the first half with Sacred Heart outshooting Fairleigh Dickinson 9-2. Freshman Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, NY.) put three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes as the Pioneers kept FDU goal keeper, Stephanie Tanzi, busy, forcing her to make four saves.
Sacred Heart came out strong in the second half and just three minutes in, junior captain Jen Mulvey (Manalpan, NJ) got a header off of Alyssa Brandofino's (East Northport, NY) free kick into the net for the first goal of the game. For Mulvey, it was her fifth goal of the season. Six minutes later, it was Lauren Boccio's (Dix Hills, NY) header that found its way past Tanzi for a 2-0 lead.
That would not be the end of Bocccio's scoring, when less than a minute after her first goal, she found net off a Heather Quevillion's corner kick rebound for her fifth goal of the season and the Pioneers' third of the game. Sacred Heart's final goal came off the foot of senior Amanda Stiles (Miller Place, NY), her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Pioneers outshot the Knights 20-5, but the Knights' Amy Flanagan (Freehold, NJ) connected on one to score Fairleigh Dickinson's only goal of the game off a free kick from 50 yards away. The Knights' leading scorer, Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY) led the team with two shots on the day.
Sacred Heart is back in action next Friday against the Wagner Seahawks.
