The 2011 Northeast Conference women's soccer award winners were announced last night at the banquet on the eve of the Women's Soccer Tournament set to start today at noon. Four Sacred Heart Pioneers received awards.
Junior Jen Mulvey (Manalapan, N.J.) was named to All-NEC first team. Mulvey, a team captain, has had an explosive junior season in which she has matched her career point total of 11 points as she accumulated five goals and one assist in 18 games. On August 2 against Maine, Mulvey notched two goals as Sacred Heart went on to beat the Black Bears 4-3.
Alyssa Brandofino (East Northport, N.Y.) was also honored, as she was named to the All-NEC second team. Brandofino is a dominant presence on the Pioneer defense that has only surrendered 21 goals in 18 games. This year, she also showed a presence on the offensive end of the game. She finished the season second in the league in assists with six. Her six assists ties a career high from last season, a number that has her seated No. 2 for season assists in the Sacred Heart Division I record book. A career total of 12 assists also puts her second for career assists in the record book.
The Pioneers also received two rookie nods. Both Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, Conn.) and Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) made the NEC All-Rookie Team. Picinich, has racked up two assists in 17 appearances (16 starts) her freshman year. Verrette found the net on one occasion, scoring her first collegiate goal on September 4 in a win over Stony Brook.
The Pioneers take the field today at noon to open the NEC Tournament against Saint Francis (PA).
