Fairfield, Conn.—The Sacred Heart Women's Soccer Team fell to Utah Valley in the 2012 season-opener early Thursday morning at Waipio Stadium at the University of Hawaii. Junior Alyssa Brandofino (East Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore Jackie DeLucia (Bethel, Conn.) each notched a goal, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Wolverines as SHU fell 3-2.
The Pioneers and the Wolverines traded possessions for the first 25 minutes before a goal was put on the board. In the 26th minute, Brandofino headed a corner kick into the goal to give Sacred Heart a brief lead. But just five minutes later, Utah Valley's Lexi Robinson ignited a three-goal run for the Wolverines.
Down 2-1 heading into the second half, the Pioneers played a tough defense, holding Utah Valley scoreless, again, for the first 20 minutes of the half. This time, it was Haley Curtis for the Wolverines. Off a header from Lexi Dunn, Curtis found the net for the game-winning goal.
With less than eight minutes left in the game, DeLucia intercepted a pass from Utah Valley goalkeeper Jessica Duffin and taking a shot that would be the final goal of the game.
The Pioneers look to rebound in the final game of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament against the host school University of Hawaii at 1 a.m. EST on Friday.
