Kingston, RI - Junior captain Kristin Verrette (Saugus, MA) scored the game winning goal unassisted in the 48th minute to give Sacred Heart the 2-1 lead and their first victory of this young 2013 season. The leading point scorer of a year ago, Verrette, could not find a better time to net her first goal of the season. SHU improves to 1-2 this year.

Sacred Heart opened up the scoring in the 29th minute when senior captain Alyssa Brandofino (East Northport, NY) played a long service to junior Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, NY) who was able to head it over the URI goalkeeper to take the 1-0 lead. It was Picinich's first goal of the season and Brandofino's first assist. SHU would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Rhode Island wasted no time after halftime to knot the game up at one. Lucy Gildein was able to find the back of the net from great passes by Nicole Brennan and Nicole Genzardi.

Just 19 seconds after URI tied the game at one, the captain Verette took it upon herself to put the Pioneers up 2-1, which would be all SHU would need. Senior goalie Sydney Judkins (South Park, PA) earned the victory for SHU, notching six crucial saves.

Sacred Heart will travel to take on the Lafayette Leopards on Sunday afternoon.
