Women’s Soccer Picked Fourth In NEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart women's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference women's soccer preseason poll released on Monday.

The Pioneers who reached the NEC tournament for the first time since 2012 last season as the third seed. The team returns a strong nucleus that includes All-NEC second team selections, juniors Alex Mesropyan, Melanie DaSilva, Nikki Zurawski and All-NEC rookie team member Caitlyn Buckley.  SHU also welcomes a 12-member freshman class to Park Avenue.

Sacred Heart was picked ahead of Bryant, Robert Morris, Wagner, LIU Brooklyn and Mount St. Mary's. The defending NEC Champions, Saint Francis U, earned the top spot in the poll with seven first place votes. Central Connecticut and Fairleigh Dickinson followed in second and third with both teams picking up one first place vote. 

SHU opens the 2017 season on Friday, August 18 at Vermont for a 7:00 p.m. start. Their home opener at Park Avenue Field is Thursday, Sept. 7 against Hartford at 3 p.m.
