Stony Brook, NY - The Pioneer women’s soccer team earned its second straight victory tonight as they defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 1-0 in overtime. Samantha Kee (Haskell, NJ) put in the game winner in the 98th minute as SHU emerged victorious in their first overtime game of the season. Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made four saves as she recorded her third clean sheet in 2009. The Pioneers have shutout their opponent in all four wins this season.
Both teams earned four shots in the opening stanza and Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) tallied two of her four saves as neither team could find the back of the net in the first half. Stony Brook (1-6-1) was flagged for five offside infractions to the Pioneers zero while SHU held the advantage on corner kicks 3-1.
Sacred Heart (4-3-0) outshot Stony Brook 7-3 in the second half and fired four shots on goal. Seawolves goalkeeper Marisa Viola came up big for Stony Brook making four of her five total saves to keep the game knotted at zero. With 2:05 remaining in regulation the Seawolves appeared to have a victory but Meghan Gilley’s shot rang off the post to keep the game scoreless as the contest went to overtime.
The Pioneers survived a scary moment at the start of overtime as Reichelt was forced to make a save just 45 seconds into the extra frame. Sacred Heart broke through on Kee’s game winner with just 2:03 left in the first overtime. The Pioneer forward stole a back pass in the Seawolves penalty box and beat the keeper to give the Pioneers the win.
Sacred Heart returns to action this Sunday as the Pioneers travel to Providence to take on the Friars. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
