Providence, RI - The Pioneer women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker this afternoon falling to Providence 1-0 as the Friars scored with just 1:34 remaining in regulation. Tara Ricciardi notched the game winner for Providence with an assist from Kate Delciampo. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made three saves while two Friar netminders combined for the clean sheet.
Sacred Heart (4-4-0) outshot the Friars 6-3 in the first half but Ashley Lewis made four saves for Providence in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Ashley Testani (Monroe, CT) led the Pioneers with two shots on goal while Samantha Kee (Haskell, NJ) had one.
Providence (5-3-1) owned the second half tallying 10 shots while holding SHU without an attempt on net. The Pioneers would hold strong until the final minutes of regulation. Ricciardi was able to corral a crossing pass from Delciampo and deposit it into the back of the net for the game winner in the 89th minute. SHU led the Friars 11-7 in fouls while Providence committed just one in the second half.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday, September 29 as they open Northeast Conference play against Fairleigh Dickinson. The contest will be held under the lights and is set for a 7:00 pm start.
