WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Despite outshooting the homestanding Monmouth Hawks 11-8, the Sacred Heart women's soccer team fell 1-0 when Courtney Snyder redirected a ball past SHU goalie Meghan Reichelt 34:06 into the game.
The win lifted Monmouth to 8-1-1 overall and 1-0 in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers dipped to 1-8-2 overall and 0-1 in the NEC.
After a Sacred Heart foul in front of its own bench, junior BrieAnne Nomejko lifted a free kick service into the box, which was flicked on by freshman April Damurjian. Damurjian's header towards the back post found the head of sophomore Kim Malecki, who nodded the ball back across the box. Snyder ran on and deposited a one-timer into the netting at 34:06, which proved to be the game-winner.
Sophomore Lia Fierro, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season, made four saves in goal for Monmouth. Reichelt also finished with four saves for SHU.
The Pioneers will be in action again Sunday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's.
