Co-Head Coaches Elizabeth Luckie and Pam London today announced that Shannon McCoy, Jen Russell, and Taylor Froelich will serve as captains for the 2011 softball team. McCoy and Russell enter their second year as captains after the SHU battery also had that distinction in 2010. This will be Froelich's first season as a captain after being a three year starter for the Pioneers.
Russell led the SHU pitching staff with 13 wins last season and compiled a 1.86 ERA. The right hander also struck out 147 batters in 174 total innings in 2010. In 2009 Russell was named to the All-Northeast Conference first team and was selected to the second team last season. McCoy played in every game for the Pioneers last season and tallied one homerun and seven RBI along with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. From behind the plate McCoy gunned down 28.5% of base runners attempting to steal. Froelich has earned All-NEC second team accolades in each of the last two seasons and has been the Pioneers most consistent hitter since her arrival at Sacred Heart. Last year the Garden Grove, CA product hit .327 and recorded a .509 slugging percentage.
The SHU softball team kicks-off the spring season March 4th as they travel to Colorado State for a three day tournament.
