Softball Drops 3-1 Decision To Host Seton Hall In Pirate Classic Championship Game

South Orange, NJ - Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) plated the Pioneers only run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning as the SHU softball team fell to Seton Hall, 3-1, in the title contest of the 2011 Pirate Classic.  Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) threw a complete game, allowing only two earned runs and striking out seven Pirates.  Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC), Liz Tsipouras (Simi Valley, CA), and Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) all earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Seton Hall (12-13) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a one-out double in the second inning from Nicole Lowenstein.  The Pioneers immediately began cutting into the deficit, manufacturing a run in the top of the third.  Froleich started the frame with a lined double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Garza (Santa Clarita, CA).  Lee followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to notch her 17 RBI of the season.

Sacred Heart (9-9) started the bottom of the inning with an error as the Pirates eventually pushed across an unearned run to make it 3-1.  Russell stranded a pair of runners in scoring position with a strikeout to end the Seton Hall threat.

The Pioneers rallied in the sixth and eventually loaded the bases as Shannon McCoy (Yorba Linda, CA) doubled with a runner on first and Melissa Tobin (Hudson, MA) worked a walk to fill the base paths.  Froelich came to the dish with two outs and the senior center fielder lifted a shallow blooper to left field that seemed destined to tie the game.  Maria DeLuca saved the day for Seton Hall as the short stop made a diving catch with her back to the infield to end the inning and rob the Pioneers of two runs.

Hannah Hill, the tournament's "Most Outstanding Pitcher", set Sacred Heart down in order to end the game and give the host Pirates the 3-1 victory.

The Pioneers return to action this Wednesday in its home opener at Pioneer Park against UConn, first pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
