Unearned Runs Prove Costly as Dartmouth Takes Two from Pioneers
Hanover, NH – The SHU softball team dropped both ends of a Wednesday double header to the Dartmouth Big Green, including a 10-9 eight inning first game. The Big Green totaled 13 unearned runs in the two contests and notched five in the bottom of the seventh to force extras in the opener. The Pioneer offense continued its hot streak as Jade Bowins (Frederick, MD), Annie Dreher (Saugus, CA), and Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) all posted homeruns.
Dartmouth (9-10) pushed across the first run of the day in the bottom of the first against SHU starter Taylor Lane (Lisbon, CT). Lane left the game after two innings of work and the Big Green notching four runs, only two earned. SHU tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second as Carley Rudloff (Queen Creek, AZ) ripped a RBI single following a Dreher leadoff double. However, the Big Green responded with a three-run bottom of the second to take a 4-1 advantage.
Sacred Heart (16-14) immediately started a rally in the top of the next frame as Bowins and Lee smacked back-to-back singles. Dreher then had the big hit and launched a three bomb to knot the score at 4-4, her fifth long ball of 2011. Lee broke the deadlock with a two-run dinger in the top of the fifth to put SHU on top 6-4, the homer was also her fifth of the season. Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) pitched five innings of relief for the Pioneers without allowing an earned run and striking out five.
SHU tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 9-4 edge. Rudloff popped a two RBI triple to right field followed by a run scoring single from Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, MA). Dartmouth put two runners on after the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh struck out. The second out of the inning should have been recorded but a Pioneer infield error continued the Big Green rally and plated a run. Dartmouth was down to its final out with the bases loaded when Alexandra St. Romain made it a new ball game with a grand slam over the left field wall. The Pioneers were unable to score in the eighth while the Big Green drove in the placed runner at second to steal game one of the double header, 10-9.
Dartmouth took advantage of a pair of SHU errors in the top of the second to hang up eight runs in the second inning of game two. Bowins provided the Pioneers with a spark, and two runs, by circling the bases for an inside the park homer in the third. The Big Green scratched out a marker in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead back to 9-2.
Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) notched two RBI in the fourth as Sacred Heart closed the gap to 9-4. Lee started the fifth with a single but was unable to score and eventually was stranded at third. Time would run on a Pioneer comeback as the game was called in the fifth inning at 9-4 due to darkness, sealing the Big Green sweep.
The Pioneer softball team returns to action, and Northeast Conference play, this Saturday for a 1:00 pm double header at Central Connecticut State.
