SHU Softball Announces 2013 Recruiting Class

Sacred Heart Co-Head Softball Coaches Elizabeth Luckie and Pam London recently announced the signing of four recruits to National Letters of Intent for the 2013 season.  Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, NY), Nicole Deissler (Commack, NY), Courtney Machamer (Williamstown, PA), and Wendi Westmark (Brookfield, CT) will all join the Pioneers next spring.

Mallory is a left-handed pitcher that will look to bolster the Pioneer rotation in 2011.  She is a two-time team MVP and was named to the Times Herald Record All-Star Team.  Mallory has not an ERA over 1.75 in any of her last three seasons, including high school and travel ball, and has recorded 418 strikeouts in her last 473 innings of work.  "Anna will be a great addition to our pitching staff," said London.  "She is a hard throwing lefty that stands just over six feet tall.  She is also a lefty power hitter who is ready to put in the time to take her game to the next level."

Deissler is an infielder who hit at an impressive .396 clip in her 2011 campaign.  She is a utility infielder who also is a three-time scholar-athlete.  Deissler also posted a .410 batting average over the last travel season, smashing 21 extra base hits.  She is a 2011 all-league selection and the recipient of the Suffolk Zone of NYS Health & Physical Education Leadership Award. "Nicole is a very well rounded athlete on both sides of the ball," commented London.  "She has a very good sense of the game and a beautiful swing.  We are very happy to have her as a Pioneer."

Machamer is a power hitting third baseman, racking up 61 RBI in her first three high school seasons.  She is a career .441 hitter and also notched a .375 batting average and 15 RBI this fall.  Machamer was the 2009 All-County Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-County team in each of the last two seasons.  "Courtney will bring an additional element of toughness and power to our club," said London.  "She is a very solid defender at the corners. We will be looking for Courtney to drive in some runs for us during her career at SHU."

Westmark, an in-state recruit, will come to Fairfield as a left-handed first baseman.  In the 2011 season her team captured the Southwest Conference Championship while Westmark earned team Defensive Player of the Year honors as well as a spot on the Southwest Conference All-Patriot Team.  She hit two grand slams for the Cheshire Wildcats 18U Gold team while her great defensive play led to a .998 fielding percentage.  "Wendi is an athlete with so much potential," commented London.  "She hits from the left side of the plate with power and at close to six-feet tall she is a great target at first base.  Wendi is the epitome of a student-athlete she is going to be a very nice addition to next year's squad."

The Pioneers will look to successfully defend their 2011 NEC Championship this season before this crop of newcomers hit the diamond in 2013.  Sacred Heart kicks-off the 2012 campaign February 24 in Myrtle Beach, SC at the Chanticleer Challenge.
