New Rochelle, NY – The SHU softball team split a double header at Iona College Tuesday afternoon. Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) cleared the bases with a three-run double and struck out 13 batters in a complete game 4-3 victory in the opening contest. The Gaels responded in game two and downed the Pioneers, 9-1, via the run rule.
Sacred Heart (15-21) cracked the scoreboard first in the fifth inning of a game one pitcher's duel. Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, CA) and Nikki Surkes (Brightwaters, NY) singled to start the frame while a Gaels error loaded the bases for Sidor. The junior doubled to left center to make it 3-0 and scored two batters later on an Annie Dreher (Saugus, CA) single to push the edge to 4-0.
Iona (18-15) managed just two hits in the first five innings versus Sidor before breaking through in the sixth. The Gaels pushed across a marker and trailed by three runs heading into the seventh. Iona rallied and charged to within one at 4-3 and had runners at first and second with two outs. Sidor escaped the jam by inducing a foul out to seal SHU's 4-3 victory.
The Gaels jumped on the Pioneers early in game two, hanging up six runs to chase the SHU starter from the affair. Iona's success continued against the bullpen as they pushed the advantage to 8-0 in the third and added another run in the fourth inning. SHU got a RBI single from Sidor to drive in Lisa Dean (Fairfield, CT) in the top of the fifth but it was not enough. Iona held an eight run lead, 9-1, after five innings to win via the run rule.
The SHU softball team returns to action this Thursday for another non-conference game at Fairfield University. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
