Brooklyn, NY – The SHU softball team was swept Sunday afternoon in a Northeast Conference double header by the LIU Blackbirds, 5-1 and 6-1. The Blackbird pitching staff allowed just two earned runs as the games were preceded by senior day ceremonies. Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) hit a solo homer for the Pioneers in game one while Jade Bowlins (Frederick, MD) notched a RBI triple in the nightcap.
LIU Brooklyn (17-30, 8-4 NEC) got on the board first in the opening game with unearned runs in the top of the second inning. The Pioneers misplayed a ball in the outfield to extend the inning and the Blackbirds made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly from Karina Cervantes.
Sacred Heart (16-25, 6-8 NEC) knotted the score at 1-1 with two outs in the top of third on Sidor's eighth homer of 2012. The Blackbirds answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame as Nichole Toven and Sterling Hoham knocked extra base hits and came around to score. Emily Kakusa supplied the other LIU Brooklyn tally with a RBI single. Nicole Archer added an insurance run with a solo homerun in the sixth. Cassie Vondrak went the distance for the Blackbirds in the circle, allowing six hits without surrendering a walk in the 5-1 victory.
The Blackbirds broke open game two early with a five spot in the second inning. Paris Shipp and Jazmin Rodriguez both hit long balls to chase the SHU starter from the contest. SHU cut into the deficit in the fifth as Sidor reached base with a single. Bowins brought home pinch runner Noelle Cahill (San Mateo, CA) with a triple to right center field.
However, the home team answered right back in its half of the inning on a solo round tripper off the bat off Kakuska. Sarah Reynolds tossed the complete game for the Blackbirds as LIU Brooklyn finished the sweep with a 6-1 win in game two.
The SHU softball team returns to action this Wednesday for a home double header against Yale. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
