Baltimore, Md. (March 15, 2013)—The Sacred Heart Softball team picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the UMBC Tournament Friday afternoon. Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) and Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) had the hot bats. Nadler was 7-8 on the day with five RBIs and a homerun, while Dreher went 3-6 with four RBIs and a homerun. The Pioneers are now 7-7 this season.
Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) picked up the win in the Pioneers' first game of the UMBC Tournament against Sienna. The senior pitched a complete game only giving up one run while striking out seven. She scored the first two runs of the game, both times being knocked in by Nadler, who was 2-3 in the game. Dreher and Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) both crossed the plate wrapping up the scoring for SHU in the 4-1 victory.
Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) collected her first collegiate win against Coppin State in the latter game after relieving Taylor Lane (Lisbon, Conn.) in the third inning. Sidor came in in the fifth to record her first save of the year facing 10 batters and striking out eight. Nadler (4-4), Dreher (2-3) and Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) all homered and batted in three, four and two runs respectively in the 9-5 win.
Sacred Heart faces La Salle and Coppin State again tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
