Three-Run First Leads SHU to 5-3 Victory Over Yale

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 16, 2014)—A three-run first inning led the Sacred Heart softball team to a 5-3 victory over the Yale University Bulldogs on a chilly Wednesday afternoon.  Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 at the plate knocking in a run and scoring one before helping her team from within the circle pitching three innings of relief for her first save of the season.

With the leadoff batter out, Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) slapped a triple over the rightfielder's head. After Bulldogs' starter Chelsey Dunham's got the next batter to foul out, Wentworth knocked Bowins in with a single to right field before Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) moved her over with a double. With two down and two runner on, rookie Kelyn Fillmore sent a single to deep left field making it easy for Wentworth and Sibthorp to score.

Sacred Heart tacked on one run in both the third and fifth innings clinching the win.

Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) picks up the win for the Pioneers after giving up just two runs and striking out two batters over four innings of work as the Pioneers move to 12-17 this season.

SHU is back in action Friday as they hit the road to dace Northeast Conference opponent Wagner in a Good Friday doubleheader beginning at noon.
