RIVERDALE, N.Y. (April 29, 2014)—Jenn Robillard (Plainville, Mass.) went 2-for-3 Tuesday collecting two RBI and scoring twice as the Sacred Heart softball team fell to Manhattan 9-7. The loss drops the Pioneers to 12-30 overall this season.
The Jaspers got on the board first bringing their leadoff batter around to score in the first inning, but the Pioneers rallied in the top of the second out to take a 4-1 lead. With one out, Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.J.) drove a double to right center before Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) snuck a single up the middle. Next batter, McKenna Wiegand (Gilbert, Ariz.) loaded the bases as she worked a walk. That's when Robillard collected her first hit and pair of RBI finding the infield gap and hitting a hard line drive up the middle scoring D'Addario and Wentworth. Wiegand and Robillard went on to score due to a pair of Manhattan fielding errors.
After a promising half inning at the plate, SHU pitchers Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) and Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) had a disastrous bottom of the second giving up six runs combined. The duo combined for just 2.1 innings pitched before Taylor Lane (Lisbon, Conn.) was brought in to finish the game. Lane tossed 3.2 innings of shutout ball allowing just two hits and striking out a pair of batters, but the damage had already been done. Mallory got the loss after giving up five runs, including the winning run in the third, on five hits.
The Pioneers are scheduled to play Connecticut Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the 2014 season finale.
