WILMINGTON, N.C.— The Sacred Heart University softball team picked up a pair of wins to open the Seahawk Softball Showcase at UNC-Wilmington on Friday. The Pioneers (7-7) used a three-run eighth inning to pull away with the 6-3 win over UNC Wilmington before holding off Youngstown State for the 2-1 win in game two.
Game One – SHU 6, UNCW – 3
Top of the 1st inning… The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out in the opening inning of play. Katelyn Christian delivered the two-RBI single down the right-field line to give SHU the 2-0 lead.
Bottom of the 1st inning… Two errors by the Pioneers to start the inning gave the Seahawks base runners early. The Pioneers were able to get the second out on a strikeout by Kristen McCann with the bases loaded. UNCW then picked up back-to-back RBI singles by Kali Jones and Booth Braswell followed by an RBI walk to take the 3-2 lead.
Top of the 2nd inning… After two quick outs, Kira Ferraiolo singled to right field to keep the inning alive. Lauren Delgadillo then walked to move Ferraiolo into scoring position. Stephanie Mangiameli stepped up to the plate and battled Rylee Pate to a seven-pitch at-bat, turning the last pitch into an RBI double to right center to tie the game at 3-3.
Top of the 8th inning… Starting extra innings with the runner on second, Kelyn Fillmore placed the sacrifice bunt to put go-ahead run 60 feet away. Fallon Bevino picked up the RBI single to right field to put SHU ahead. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs on a RBI single from Caroline Kruger and off an error by Hannah Adamczyk at third base.
- Pioneers outhit the Seahawks 7-4 in the game.
- McCann struck out a season-high 10 batters in her fifth complete game of the season.
- Bevino led SHU with two hits, good for her fourth multi-hit game of the season.
- The Pioneers recorded the first extra-innings victory of the season.
Game Two – SHU 2, Youngstown State 1
Bottom of the 1st inning… The Penguins got on the board first off, the one-out double by Lexi Zappitelli.
Top of the 2nd inning… Christian picked up the one-out single to right field to jump-start the Pioneers inning. She then advanced to second on the wild pitch to get into scoring position. Hailey Desrosiers then recorded the RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Top of the 5th inning… Jennie Boisvert led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Addison Landry came on to pinch run and advanced to third on the sacrifice bunt by Jessica Dubbioso. Youngstown State recorded the popout for the first out. Mangiameli stepped up to the plate and delivered the double to right center field to drive in the go-ahead run.
- Eight different Pioneers recorded hits on the afternoon
- Orosco earned her second win of the season, allowing just one run on five hits. She struck out a season-high nine batters.
- SHU earned back-to-back wins for the second time this season.
The Pioneers have another two-game day tomorrow with another matchup with UNC-Wilmington at 12:30 p.m. and then a 5:30 p.m. contest against North Carolina A & T.
