Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) pitched a no hitter against UNC-Greensboro in just her second career start as Sacred Heart won two contests and reached the championship game of the Spartan Classic. Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) threw a shutout of her own in the Pioneers first game of the day. Liz Tsipouras (Simi Valley, CA) belted a three-run walkoff homerun in the bottom of the fifth against the Spartans that enforced the run rule and clinched Sidor's no hit bid.
Sacred Heart (2-2) took control early against Niagara putting up four runs in the first inning against the Purple Eagles. Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) drove in the first SHU run smashing one of her two doubles for the game to bring home Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA). Tsipouras doubled to right center later in the inning to make it a 2-0 game. Niagara extended the SHU frame and gave the Pioneers their third run with a fielding error. Carley Rudloff (Thousand Oaks, CA) finished off the top of the first making it a 4-0 affair with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Niagara (1-2) had its best chance to score in their half of the first inning after the first two batters of the game reached base. Russell would get a ground ball double play from the next batter to put a runner on second with two outs. McDonald followed that with a single up the middle but center fielder Froelich would gun down the Niagara runner at the plate to end the threat.
Marissa Montemagni (Chicopee, MA) would extend the Pioneer lead to 6-0 in the third inning with a two run triple to left center. Alyssa Garza (Santa Clarita, CA) got an RBI later in the inning with an infield single. Lee used her second double of the game and Garza’s speed allowed her to score from first and make it an 8-0 contest. Russell did not allow a hit in the final three innings as she picked up her first win of the season.
The Pioneers entered the bracket portion of the tournament as the #2 seed and faced UNC-Greensboro (3-9), who beat the SHU 5-3 yesterday. Sacred Heart edged into the lead in the third inning as Garza knocked an RBI single to drive in Froelich and make it 1-0. After Lee and Tsipouras drew walks Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) slammed a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give SHU a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Sacred Heart needed four runs in the last of the fifth to seal Sidor's no hitter, the rookie pitcher struck out six batters and walked just two. Rudloff and Froelich started off the frame with back-to-back singles and after a passed ball Amanda Bradley (Langley, BC) drove in a run with a fielder's choice to make it 5-0 SHU. With two outs Tsipouras hit the first homer of her collegiate career to center field to give the Pioneers the walk off victory.
The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow in the championship game of the Spartan Classic. Sacred Heart will take on Cleveland St. who defeated SHU earlier in the tournament, game time is set for 1:00 pm.
