The Pioneer softball team dropped its third straight game to a Big East opponent, suffering a 5-2 setback at the hands of Connecticut today in Storrs, CT. The Huskies built a 3-0 lead after one inning while two UConn pitchers combined to hold Sacred Heart to two runs. Sophomore Liz Tsipouras (Simi Valley, CA) posted the only SHU runs of the day with a two run homer in the sixth.
Connecticut (10-16) opened up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Amy DeLuca powered out a two run blast. The Huskies extened the advantage to 3-0 three batters later with an infield single off the bat of Jessica Arremony. UConn pushed two more runs across in the fourth with a leadoff error and two singles in the inning.
SHU starter Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) finished the game allowing five runs, four earned, in four innings while striking out three Huskies. Freshman Nicole Sidor (North Vancouver, BC) tossed two scoreless innings in relief, posting one strike out.
Sacred Heart (9-14) avoided a shutout with Tsipouras' team leading sixth homer of 2010, which made it a 5-2 affair. The sophomore pitcher and third baseman now has 19 RBI on the season after driving in Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) who led off the frame with a single to left. The Huskies set down the last six Pioneers in order to extend SHU's losing streak to six games.
