Fairfield, CT - The Pioneer softball team split an afternoon double header with the Yale Bulldogs today at Pioneer Park. Sacred Heart picked up a 4-1 win in the first game behind a solid pitching performance from freshman Nicole Sidor (North Vancouver, BC). Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) had an RBI double and Liz Tsipouras (Simi Valley, CA) hit her eighth homer of the year to propel SHU to the victory. The Bulldogs responded winning the finale of the double dip 10-0 in five innings.
Sacred Heart (15-18) took an early 1-0 lead as Froelich laced an RBI double to right center in the second inning to score Jill Timmer (La Mesa, CA). In the next inning Tsipouras made it a 2-0 field hitting a bomb to left field for her team leading eighth homerun and 23rd RBI.
Base running, which had been a problem for the Pioneers last weekend, would allow Sacred Heart to push the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Froelich led off the frame with a single to left, setting up a bunt situation for Alyssa Garza (Santa Clarita, CA). Garza laid down a perfect bunt up the third base line and beat it out for a single. Froelich never hesitated and slid into third base with no Bulldog covering. A wild pitch on ball four to Tsipouras would allow Froelich to score and put runners on first and third with one out. Freshman Melissa Tobin (Hudson, MA) pinch ran for Tsipouras and took off for second to deliberately get caught in a run down. The play allowed Garza to steal home and provide the Pioneers with a four run cushion.
Sidor had a no hitter working through five innings before Lexi Peacock hit a bloop single into right field. A Pioneer error in the inning would lead to an unearned run against Sidor, Yale's only score of the game. Sidor finished the contest with eight strike outs as she picked up her fourth win of 2010.
Yale (9-18) started off strong in game two and never looked back as they cruised to a 10-0 victory. The Bulldogs went up 2-0 in the first with back-to-back RBI singles from Jennifer Ong and Allie Canulli. Yale tacked on two more in the third thanks to a SHU error and another double from Ong, chasing the Pioneers game two starter, Tsipouras. The Bulldogs roughed up relief pitcher Kylie Abrams (Thousand Oaks, CA) for five runs in the fourth capped by a two-run double from Canulli. The Bulldogs added another in the fifth while the Pioneers just mustered two hits off of a pair of Yale pitchers as the afternoon double header resulted in a split.
Sacred Heart takes to the road this weekend in a pair of crucial NEC double headers. The Pioneers take on Mount St. Mary's on Saturday before concluding the trip with first place Monmouth on Sunday.
