The Sacred Heart softball team was forced to settle for a split of a double header with Fairleigh Dickinson this afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Knights shut out the Pioneers in game one of the double header en route to a 2-0 victory. Sacred Heart responded in the second game with a 6-1 win behind two RBI's from senior Jill Timmer (La Mesa, CA)
Sacred Heart (19-23, 8-6 NEC) would have the first scoring chance of the opening game as Shannon McCoy (Yorba Linda, CA) and Jasmine Vicente (Wantagh, NY) each dropped in a single along the left field line in the first inning. However, the Pioneers would strand both runners and the game remained scoreless. Pioneer starter Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) pitched a complete game allowing five hits and two runs, one earned. She also became the SHU all-time career strikeout leader in division I with a third inning K of Maire Shaughnessy.
Fairleigh Dickinson (13-29, 3-11 NEC) posted the only runs of the first game in the top of the fifth. The inning started with back-to-back infield singles as the Knights beat out two extremely tight plays at first. The next batter, Alex Schubert, laid down a sacrifice bunt but Russell’s throw sailed up the right field line to allow a run to score. It stayed a 1-0 affair as the Pioneers were able to gun down a second run at the plate. Fairleigh Dickinson would extend the lead on the next batter as Shaughnessy hit an RBI single down the right field line.
The Pioneers were not able to push a run across in the final stages of the game as Fairleigh Dickinson came away with the 2-0 victory. FDU starter Caitlin Bradac out-dueled Russell tossing a complete game shutout to pick up the win while allowing just five hits and striking out six.
Sacred Heart ended its scoring drought right off the bat in the second game of the double header. Alyssa Garza (Santa Clarita, CA) slammed a double off the left field wall and Jill Timmer (La Mesa, CA) brought her home two batters later with an RBI single to make it 1-0 after the first inning. Fairleigh Dickinson evened the game in the third frame as Liz Woidt led off with a single and later scored on a Kristen Kinneer single.
The Pioneers responded with three more runs in their half of the third inning. Melissa Tobin (Hudson, MA) and Froelich started the rally with back-to-back singles. Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) loaded the bases with a walk and Timmer got another RBI after being hit with an 0-2 pitch. Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) rolled a ball to the second baseman with one out. After chasing down Timmer, who stopped to force a tag, the Knights fielder threw the ball away allowing two runs to score and giving SHU a 4-1 advantage.
Fairleigh Dickinson put two runners on with one out to start the next half inning. The rally was stifled when Schubert was called out on first for leaving the bag too early. Sacred Heart pushed its lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. Freshmen Nikki Surkes (Brightwaters, NY) and Tobin each had a single and the Knights helped SHU with an error to allow an unearned run to cross the plate. The Pioneers got another unearned run in the sixth following a two-out FDU fielding error.
Game two starter Nicole Sidor (North Vancouver, BC) shut down the Knights the rest of the way to secure the 6-1 victory for Sacred Heart. The freshmen pitcher picked up her sixth win of the season allowing one run on just five hits and striking out four.
The Pioneers return to action this Wednesday as they host a double header with Stony Brook. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
