Softball Adds to 2010 Recruiting Class
June 2, 2009
Pioneer Co-Head softball coaches Elizabeth Luckie and Pam London announced the addition of Nicki Surkes (Bayshore, NY) to this year’s recruiting class. Surkes, a catcher and outfielder, signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the defending Northeast Conference Champions for the 2010 campaign. The Long Island native is a two time All-Suffolk County player and team MVP.
Surkes handles the bat extremely well batting over .420 each of the last two seasons and has totaled 61 RBI in 148 at bats. She also has displayed great speed for a catcher swiping seven bases in 2008 and eight in 2009. In the past two seasons Surkes has a .520 on base percentage scoring 49 runs while walking 27 times to just seven strike outs.
Surkes displayed her defensive prowess for her summer team, Sudden Impact Gold. As a catcher she gunned down 15 base runners attempting to steal while also recording six outfield assists. Surkes exploded at the plate over the summer as well batting over .530 and belting eight home runs.
London commented on the addition of Surkes to the roster, “Nicki is a power hitter and a good defender, she will definitely have a positive and immediate impact on our team. She can give Shannon (McCoy) a break behind the plate as well provide offense.” Surkes will join fellow recruit Nicole Sidor (Vancouver, BC), a pitcher and outfielder, as the Pioneers gear up for the 2010 season.
