PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Sacred Heart University swimming team finished in 12th out of 15 teams at the Frank Elm Invitational, hosted by Rutgers University, over the weekend. Senior Katie Marshall (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with the fourth best time overall in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:07.14.
Marshall swam the 200-fly prelims in 2:10.46 and qualified for the B Finals. In her heat, she came from behind to win and despite the ninth place finish she posted the fourth best time in the field of 48 participants. Marshall also swam a season-best 1:00.10 in the 100-fly and a 5:24.56 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Junior Laurie Casado (Queens, N.Y.) qualified for the finals in the 200-yard breststroke with a time of 2:32.29. She also swam a season-best 1:09.24 in the 100-breaststroke. She also competed in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, finishing with time of 26.52 and 58.33, respectively.
In the 100-free, sophomore Meg Bellamy (Barrington, R.I.) finished the race in 56.13, while classmate Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, Mass.) finished nearly one second behind at 57.16. Bellamy recorded the top time for SHU in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:15.12. McGrath also competed in the 200-free and hit the wall in 2:00.95.
Sophomore Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, N.Y.) registered times of 1:10.58 and 2:33.73 in the 100 and 200-breaststrokes. Freshmen Liz Bennett (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Nicole Del Nero (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) set personal-bests in the 100 and 200-backstrokes. Bennett finished in times of 1:03.74 and 2:19.03, while Del Nero posted finishes of 1:03.90 and 2:16.36.
Freshman Hayley McGill (Old Lyme, Conn.) swam a team-best 26.48 in the 50-free and completed the 200-back in 2:19.20.
The Pioneers return to the pool on December 11 when they visit Siena.
