Pioneers Take Home Sixth Place in NEC Swimming Championship

Fairfield, Conn.—On the final day of the Northeast Conference Swimming Championship, the Pioneers nabbed three top-ten finishes in the finals. The Sacred Heart women's swimming team finished sixth overall in the four-day meet.

All three seniors made earned their way into the finals in their respective events. Co-Captain Meghan Bailey (Walpole, Mass.) worked her way into the 200 yard Butterfly final by notching an eighth place finish in the preliminaries clocking in at 2:07.82. She moved up a place later that day in the finals finishing in 2:10.64 for the seventh place finish. Allison Thurston (Berlin, Conn.) finished fourteenth in the same event completing the final heat in 2:15.97. She swam the preliminary in 2:17.91.

Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, N.J.) and Laurie Casado (Queens, N.Y.) made it to the finals in the 200 yard Breaststroke. Walters finished tied for ninth place, swimming it in 2:27.96, two second better than her preliminary heat. Casado took sixteenth place, clocking in at 2:32.46.

Liz Bennett swam the 200 yard Backstroke preliminary in 2:14.32 earning her way into the finals. Beating her previous time by a fraction of a second (2:14.15) notched her the fifteenth place in the finals.

Bailey, Walters, Haley McGill (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, Mass.) teamed up in the 400 yard relay final heat. Clocking in at 4:06.72, they picked up a sixth place finish.
