The Sacred Heart women's team opened the 2010 fall season on Saturday hosting the Fairfield Doubles Invitational on the SHU Tennis Courts on Saturday. The Pioneer team of juniors Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) advanced to the finals in the #2 Flight.
Donnelly and Downing picked up a pair of wins in Pool play over UConn and Bryant. The duo beat Alexa Gregory and Marie Gargiolo of UConn 8-3 and Bryant's Valerie Cunto Cuervo and Stephanie Smyers, 8-6.
The advanced through the semifinal round wiht an 8-6 win over Abby McKeon and Lucy Nutting from Connecticut. The duo were stopped in the finals by the Quinnipiac team of Julia LaBarthe and Sarah Viebrock, 8-6.
In the #1 flight, the team of senior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) and freshman Gabi Kalden (New Brunswick, NJ), making her SHU debut, advnaced to the semifinal round. Demers and Kalden went 2-1 in Pool play before losing to eventual flight champions Adrienne Markison and Rachel Cantor of Quinnipiac, in a tight 8-7 maches, 7-3 in the tie breaker.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, September 15th when thye play host to Manhattan at 4:00 pm on the SHU Tennis Courts.
