SHU Women Compete at QU Invitational
FAIRFIELD, CT (September 17, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team officially got their 2012-13 season underway over the weekend, competing in the 16th Annual Quinnipiac University Invitational on the Hamden campus.
Freshman Lindsey Post (Danbury, CT) advanced to the semifinals of her flight in the first collegiate tournament of her young career. Post beat a pair of opponents from the University of Connecticut on her way to the semifinals of the "C" Singles Flight.
Post won here opening match against Emilie Burgess, 6-3 and 7-5 and then beat her UConn teammate Marie Gargiulo in three sets. Post won the first set 6-2, dropped the second 7-5 and won in a third set tiebreaker, 10-8. Post's run was ended in the semifinal round by Seton Hall's Julia Keenan, 6-2, 6-1.
Post teamed with fellow freshman Alyssa Migliorini (North Haven, CT) to earn a win in the "B" Doubles Flight. The duo teamed to beat the team from UConn of Sarah Griffin and Sarah Baker, 8-6. In singles play, Migliorini beat Christie Greenberg from Hartford, 8-6, in "C" Consolation.
Freshman Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) won her opening match in the "B" Singles Flight, topping Hannah Zangari from Providence, 6-3, 6-4. She lost to Alex Landert of Seton Hall, 2-6, 6-0, 10-3 in the quarterfinal round.
Junior Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and DeRienzo teamed up to beat Katina Zampas and Hannah Goldman from Hartford, 8-1 in "A" Doubles Flight. Kaldan beat Zampas from Hartford, 8-2 in the "A" consolation bracket.
Freshman Paige Olson (Sykesville, MD) won the "B" Consolation bracket beating Abby McKeon of UConn, 8-5 and Zangari of Providence, 8-4
The Pioneers will jump into dual match action on Wednesday against NEC rival Monmouth on the road.
