Women's Tennis Competes at Quinnipiac Invitational

Fairfield, CT (September 16, 2013) – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team competed in the Quinnipiac Invitational over the weekend on the campus of their former conference rival.

Sophomore Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) highlighted the weekend for the Pioneers, making it all the way to the semi-finals of the A singles flight. DeRienzo knocked off Sarah Hellstem of Niagara , 6-2, 6-4 in the first round before taking taking down Navy's Darien Sears and Seton Hall's Hannah Liljekvist both in third set super tiebreakers to find herself in the semi-finals. DeRienzo was finally toppled, 6-0, 7-6 to Sophia Dzulynsky of Quinnipiac.

In other action from the weekend, sophomore Lindsey Post (Danbury, CT) earned a win over Madeline Makings of Hartford in the B draw before falling to eventual champion Emma Alderman of UCONN. Freshman Taylor Gurda (Middletown, NY) was a 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 victor over Hannah Zangari of Providence in the C singles flight. Another Pioneer freshman Mariah Wardius (Reading, PA) earned a victory over Hartford's Felicia Demarco by the score of 6-0, 6-1 before losing to the eventual D Flight champ Taler Brazell of Army.

Senior Maggie Tooley (Cheshire, CT) added a 9-7 win over UCONN's Marie Gargiulo.

SHU is back in action on September 28th and 29th when they compete in the Army Invitational.
