Pioneers Defeat Fairfield 5-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team narrowily earned the doubles point and won four singles matches on their way to a 5-2 win over cross-town rival, Fairfield, Monday afternoon at the SHU Tennis Courts.

Sacred Heart won two tiebreakers in doubles action to snag the first point of the match. The duo of Lindsey Post (Danbury, CT) and Paige Olson (Sykesvile, MD) defeated Monica Yajima and Alison Radde 8-7 (5), while Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) and Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) defeated Sharissa Ryan and Tori Pirrello, 8-7 (3).

DeRienzo kept her hot streak going with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Yajima for her fourth straight victory at number one singles. Olson, Rydzewski and freshman Taylor Gurda (Middletown, NY) also all earned straight set victories.

The Pioneers wrap up their regular season tomorrow afternoon with a home match-up against the Rhode Island Rams.
