Katie DeRienzo Named NEC Tennis Player of the Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn – Sophomore Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon. DeRienzo is the second consecutive Pioneer to win the award as junior Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) claimed the honor last week.

DeRienzo was undefeated this week at number one singles, gaining wins over Providence, Hartford, and UMASS. The New Yorknative started the week with a hard fought 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Providence's Maria Bernardez. She followed that up with a win over Hartford's Ashley Harel (up 4-0 before Harel retired), before capping off her flawless week with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sonia Bokhari of UMass.

DeRienzo made it four wins in a row yesterday afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fairfield's Monica Yajima. At number one singles this season, DeRienzo went 12-6 and won seven of her last eight matches to close the year.

DeRienzo and the rest of the Pioneers will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they take on the Saint Francis University Red Flash in the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament.
