Nine members of the Sacred Heart University tennis program were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Thursday with selection to the organizations 2014 Scholar-Athlete recognition. The Pioneer women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors as well, for the 12th time in 13 years.
Seniors Gabriela Kaldan (New Brunswick, N.J.) and Maggie Tooley (Cheshire, Conn.) headlined the seven members of the women's team that earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. Junior Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, N.Y.), sophomores Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, N.Y.), Paige Olson (Sykesville, Md.), and Lindsay Post (Danbury, Conn.), and freshman Taylor Gurda (Middletown, N.Y.) also earned the award, presented to student-athletes that have a 3.50 cumulative GPA, earned a varsity letter and have been at their institution for at least two semesters.
The Sacred Heart men's team had two of its members recognized for their academic achievement as well on Thursday. Sophomore Matt Dean (Newington, Conn.) and freshman Alex Bose (Tucson, Ariz.) both completed the 2013-14 academic year with cumulative GPA's of over 3.5.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. The Pioneer women's tennis team combined for a 3.411 GPA in the 2013-14 academic year.
As a whole, Pioneer student-athletes have recorded 18 consecutive semesters with a cumulative department GPA of 3.0 or higher.
