FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 31, 2010) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team picked up their second-straight dual match victory Wednesday afternoon, beating Providence College 6-1 on the SHU Tennis Courts. The Pioneers swept the doubles matches and improve their record to 8-9 on the season.
Sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) led the way in singles action with a win at #1 over Marisela Aviles-Duron. Donnelly won the first set 6-1 and rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the second with a 10-3 tie break victory. Junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) beat Ayushi Sinha, 6-0, 7-6 at #2 singles while senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) beat Melanie Albert, 6-1, 6-4 at #4.
Junior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Melissa Ferry in the #5 slot. Junior Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) was leading her match 4-1 in the first set with Courtney Burek at #3 and got the win when Burek retired.
In doubled, Chao and Harrington teamed for a win at #1 over Aviles-Duron and Sinha, 8-1. Donnelly and Downing beat Burek and Jen Cusak 8-6 at 32 while Kasinow and senior Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) beat Ferry and Brittany Maddock at #3, 8-5.
The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday afternoon hosting Massachusetts at 1:30 pm.
