FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 18, 2009) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened up the 2009-10 season Thursday afternoon beating Northeast Conference foe Monmouth, 6-1. The Pioneers swept all six singles matches to earn their first dual match victory of the season.
Senior Julie Kasinow (Wall, NJ) picked up a pair of wins to help lead the Pioneers to the victory. Kasinow recorded a 6-2 and 6-0 win at #3 singles, beating MU's Katie Tierney. Kasinow teamed with freshman Rebecca McMullin, making her collegiate debut, at #1 doubles to earn an 8-4 win over Tierney and Nicole Lippens.
Sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jessica Singer at #1 singles as SHU dominated singles play, taking every match without dropping a set. Junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at #2 singles over Lippens.
At #4 singles, SHU junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) beat Dana Ferrari, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) won her #5 singles match 6-1, 6-0 over Diane Washer and sophomore Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) beat Britney Dupuis, 6-1, 6-0 at #6 singles to complete the sweep.
The Hawks took the doubles point with Singer and Washer teaming for an 8-5 win over senior Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) and junior Sonia Mideva (Nairobi, Kenya) and Ferrari and Friedrick positng an 8-1 win over sophomore Kristin Legenza (Berlin, CT) and senior Lindsey Scierka (Cromwell, CT).
The Pioneers are right back in action this weekend playing in the Quinnipiac Invitational.
