EMMITSBURG, MD (May 5, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's track & field team piled up 70 points on their way to leading after day one of the 2012 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships at Mount St. Mary's University. The Pioneers lead defending champion Monmouth who totaled 48 points on Saturday.
The Pioneer throwers dominated on Saturday as SHU picked-up 19 points in the shot put and got a first place finish in the weight throw from Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT). Smith, the meet record holder in the event, defended her hammer throw title and eaisly qualified for ECAC's with a throw of 188'01". Smith bested the field by nearly seven feet.
Christine Middleton (Colchester, CT) and Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) also scored in the event, finishing third and sixth. Middleton posted an ECAC qualifying throw of 169'07" while Smith had a throw of 162'07".
In the shot put, SHU's Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) was looking to make it two titles in a row but Saint Francis (PA) veteran Christin Bridge just edged her out by a little less than one foot for the medal. Bridge had a throw of 48'00". Aponte took the silver with a toss of 47'01", meeting the ECAC standard.
Kolbi Smith (Valatie, NY) was fourth overall with a throw of 44'09.75" while Middleton took fifth with a toss of 43'00.25". Athalia Smith rounded out SHU's scorers in the event with a seventh place finish thanks to a throw of 42'09".
In the long jump, Ashley Matakevich (Stratford, CT) was fourth overall with a jump of 18'09.25". In the pole vault, Emily Kiss (Kenvil, NJ) finished sixth and Sarah Wallis (Forked River, NJ) seventh. Kiss cleared a height of 9'00.25" while Wallis cleared the bar at 8'06.25".
The SHU 4x800 meter relay team of Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY), Brittany Heninger (Bristol, CT), Emma Bolduc (Peterborough, NH) and Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) took home fourth with a time of 9:24.39. In the 10,000 meters, SHU had three runners finish in the five led by Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) in second with a time of 37:25.72, an ECAC qualifying mark. Brittany Lane (Greenwich, NY) also met the standard for ECAC's with a third place finish in 37:34.42. Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, CT) took fifth in 39:03.50.
Heninger and Bolduc both qualified for Sunday's final in the 1,500 meters. The duo had the two fastest times in qualifying at 4:42.11 and 4:44.06, respectively. In the 800 meters, Llobell and Catherine Westby (Islip, NY) moved on to the finals after clocking in at 2:16.51 and 2:18.66. Katelyn Racanelli (Riverside, CT) qualified for the 400-meter final with a time of 57.05 seconds while Ashia Wright (Cheshire CT) made it to the 100-meter final thanks to a time of 12.35 seconds.
Women's competition resumes on Sunday, May 6 out in the field with the discus at 10:30 am. The first track event be be the steeple chase at 12:25 pm.
