FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Junior Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, Conn.) was named the NEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after running the fourth sub-17 minute time in the 5000m last Friday at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational.
Contesting an ultra-competitive field at the Terrier Invitational, Hutchins became only the fourth runner in NEC history to turn in a sub-17 minute 5K performance. She jumped out to the lead only one lap into the second of four heats and never looked back. Despite having to run by herself for 24 laps, the junior shaved more than 30 seconds off her previous personal best and produced the fifth-fastest time at the meet. Clocking in at 16:54.52, Hutchins shot up to first place on the conference leaderboard and into the No. 15 spot of the NCAA Division I performance list.
Sacred Heart will next compete at the University of Rhode Island Coaches' Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 1.
