FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman Mareena DiMilia (Claryville, N.Y.) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Track and Field Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after posting a pair of top-five finishes last weekend at the Rider Invitational.
DiMilia had a breakout performance in the hammer throw on Saturday, placing second out of 21 entries and exceeding her previous personal best by more than 2 meters. Her fling of 53.25 meters (174' 8") moved her into a first-place tie on the NEC leaderboard for the event. While her mark easily topped the ECAC qualifying standard of 51.00 meters (167' 4"), it also bettered the USA Junior National Championship standard, which is also 51.00 meters, earning herself a trip to the prestigious meet held in Eugene, Oregon in July. Additionally, DiMilia's mark is the best ever by a Sacred Heart freshman, and 3rd best overall in program history.
She also placed fourth in the shot put at Rider with a heave of 11.61 meters (38' 1 ¼"), and eighth in the discus throw with a personal best of 33.51 meters (109' 11"). Aside from sharing the conference lead in the hammer throw, the all-around freshman thrower also ranks fourth in the javelin throw, ninth in the shot put, and 17th in the discus throw.
