FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Trevor Guerrera and Jacqueline Thorne of the Sacred Heart Track and Field team were honored with Northeast Conference Track Athlete of the Week Awards on Tuesday for their performances at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
Guerrera contested an 800m race for the first time this season and catapulted himself into the NCAA Division I Top 15 in the process. Crushing the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships in March, the third-year Pioneer crossed the line in 1:48.75 at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational. The performance, which was good enough for third place out of 123 entries at the meet, was more than 2.0 seconds better than Guerrera's previous indoor personal best. Moving into the No. 13 spot on the Division I national leader board, the Empire State product missed breaking Patrick Peterson's indoor school record (2013) by a mere .06 second.
Thorne produced a huge personal best to win her section in the Mile at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on Friday. Piercing the five-minute barrier for the first-time ever, the first-year Pioneer regained her spot atop the NEC leader board.Narrowly missing the ECAC Championships qualifying standard, the rookie clocked in at 4:59.91. Thorne, who has continued to trim time off her Mile and has also shown well in the 1,000m run, has won four of a possible six NEC Rookie of the Week awards this season.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday, Feb. 3. at the 13th Annual Yale University Giegengack Invitational in New Haven, CT
