The Sacred Heart track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2010 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's University. The Pioneer women finished fourth at the event while the men came in fifth overall.
Sacred Heart's fourth place came thanks to 97 team points over the two day event. The Monmouth Hawks took home the title with 202 points followed by Long Island with 145 points and Mount St. Mary's with 101 points. For the men, SHU finished the weekend with 74 points. The Hawks also claimed the men's championship recording 214.50 points. LIU was second with 137.50, Central Connecticut was third with 79 and the Mount was fourth at 78.50.
On Sunday, senior Sarah Tencza (Succasunna, NJ) took second in the 800 meters clocking in at 2:15.11. Sophomore Karlie Dean (Stormville, NY) finished sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 57.82 seconds while freshman Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY) ran sixth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:54.33.
The 4x100 meter relay team of junior Stephanie Kanner (Coram, NY), Dean, Matakevich and Julianne Cappadona (North Attleboro, MA) finished sixth in the race with a time of 48.53 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team of Kanner, Tencza, Caitlin McLaughlin (East Northport, NY) and Dean ran fourth in a time of 3:59.95. Freshman Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) took seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:58.51.
On Saturday, Sacred Heart won the 4x800 meter relay, with the foursome of freshman Civardi, Tencza, Erin O'Shea (Port Jefferson Station, NY) and sophomore Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) winning the NEC title with a time of 9:26.40. In the 10,000 meters, SHU picked up points from junior Samantha Troy (Lebanon, CT), sophomore Mckenzie Krause (Bennington, VT) and junior Dana Troy (Lebanon, CT). Samantha Troy finished fifth with a time of 39:51.53 followed by Krause in seventh (41:05.26) and Dana Troy in eighth (41:10.49).
In the high jump, freshman Ashley Beck (Nesconset, NY) took seventh clearing the bar at 5'2.25". Sophomore Ashley Matakevich (Stratford, CT) took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 37'5.75". In the long jump, she took fourth overall on Saturday with a leap of 18'1.50".
Sophomore Christine Middleton (Colchester, CT) placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 131'1". Sophomore Carol Cress (Butler, PA) finished eighth in the event throwing 121'4". In the shot put event, Sacred Heart picked up points from sophomores Carol Cress (Butler, PA) and Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) who finished third and fifth respectively. Cress recorded a toss of 42'9.75" while Smith checked in at 42'2.00".
In the hammer throw, Smith finished second with an ECAC qualifying throw of 178'1". Middleton finished third with a throw of 169'11" while sophomore Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) took eight with a throw of 152'9". Senior Bonnie Kilis (Marlborough, CT) finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 127'4".
On the track for the men, sophomore Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT) and freshman Jeremy Rosado (Brooklyn, NY) each qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 110 meter hurdles with second and third place finished. Rosado also qualified in the 400 meter hurdles thanks to a third place finish. Jean-Louis ran second in the 100 meter clocking in at 14.48 seconds. Rosado was third in 14.58 seconds and third in the 400 meters in 53.78 seconds. Senior Keith Rowe (Taunton, MA) finished sixth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.37 seconds. Freshman Justin McLoughlin (West Hurley, NY) ran eighth in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.06 seconds.
The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT), Jean-Louis, Joshua Roman (Seymour, CT) and Rosado posted an IC4A qualifying time of 42.10 seconds, good for a fourth place finish. Roman, senior Jason Soule (South Portland, ME), Lyhne and Jean-Louis finished fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:16.95, finishing fourth.
Jean-Louis ran eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.09 seconds and also scored in the field, finishing third in the triple jump with a leap of 46'7.50". Lyhne also scored in the 400 meters finishing seventh with a time of 48.92 seconds. Sophomore Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT) finished sixth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:00.94.
Freshman Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 130'00". In the javelin, junior Sean Rotheburger (Elmwood Park, NJ) placed fifth with a throw of 191'6". In the high jump, SHU's Nicholas Phillips (Portland, ME) cleared the bar at 6'3.50", good for a sixth place finish.
The Pioneers picked up points on Saturday in the 10,000 meters as sophomore Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) finished fourth overall (32:00.17) with senior Brendan Rickert (Danbury, CT) coming in eighth (32:37.12). The SHU 4x800 meter relay team of senior Matthew Chorney (Bristol, NH), junior Daniel Koehler (Red Hook, NY), sophomore John Ahern (Islip Terrace, NY) and Lusignan finished fifth with a time of 7:55.09.
