The women's volleyball team opened its season with a solid showing against the 25th ranked team in the nation but eventually dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Mary's (CA). Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) led the Pioneers with a match high 22 digs. Freshman Christina Bauch (Trabuco Canyon, CA) notched a team high 10 kills. Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) earned 32 assists while notching eight digs.
St. Mary's (CA) (2-0) stormed to a 25-10 opening set win after compiling a .500 hitting percentage, making just one error. The Gaels took an early lead in the second set but the Pioneers clawed back to within four at 13-9. However, St. Mary's (CA) would not allow SHU to take back-to-back points the rest of the set and finished on top, 25-14, to extend their match lead to 2-0.
Sacred Heart (0-1) showed fight in the third game as the two teams exchanged points early and were level at 10-10. The Pioneers then pulled ahead with four straight points, including two kills from Malie Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) and a service ace from Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO). The Gaels kept it tight at 23-22 and 24-23 but would not be able to close the gap. A kill from Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) gave SHU the 25-23 victory and put the match into the fourth set.
The Gaels again built an early lead as they jumped out in front 13-6. The Pioneers fought off two match points but St. Mary's (CA) proved to be too much in the end. SMC won the final game 25-16 to clinch the 3-1 match victory. Megan York led the way for the Gaels offense with 18 kills and a .306 hitting percentage.
Sacred Heart is back in action tomorrow afternoon in their second match at the Long Beach State Baden Classic. SHU is scheduled to take on host Long Beach state at 1:00 pm EST.
