Fairfield, CT – Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) and Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena, CA) both posted a match high 18 digs as the Pioneers defeated Brown in SHU's home opener, the nightcap of day one of the 2011 SHU Invitational. Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) was the most efficient attacker on the floor, notching nine kills on just 13 attempts for a .692 hitting percentage. The win increases the Pioneers program best home winning streak to 18, dating back to the end of the 2009 season.
Brown (0-1) had the momentum in the early going and jumped out a 7-3 advantage in the opening set. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead and eventually grabbed an advantage of their own at 17-16 following a block from Sage and Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA). SHU rattled off three straight points late, including a kill from freshman Alissa Young (La Verne, CA) to earn three set points at 24-21. The Bears saved the first but eventually a service error gave the Pioneers the opening frame, 25-22.
Sacred Heart (3-1) posted its highest hitting percentage of the match, .256, in the second set behind five kills from Johanna Ovsenek (London, Ontario). Ovsenek finished the night tied with Roleder for a team high ten kills. SHU doubled up Brown in the early going, cruising out to a 10-5 cushion. The lead reached as many as nine at 21-12 as Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) slammed home one of her three kills of the stanza. The Pioneers eventually took the set 25-20 on an Ovsenek kill to move within one set of the victory.
The Pioneers rolled early in the third set and again built a health advantage as Roleder, Sage, and Hetherington supplied three straight kills to make it 13-6. SHU held the Bears to just a .053 hitting mark in the final set. Young posted back-to-back kills, she finished with eight total, to give the Pioneers a 20-11 edge. Roleder tallied the last point with a kill as Sacred Heart took the set 25-17 and completed the sweep of the Bears.
Alisa Mesa (Long Beach, CA) and Megan Pulone (Diamond Bar, CA), who share setting duties, each dished out a match high 21 assists. Roleder notched her first double-double of the year in her debut inside the Pitt Center.
The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team rounds out the SHU Invitational tomorrow with a 9:30 am meeting with a 9:30 am meeting with Hartford and a 4:30 pm clash against Rutgers.
