Women's Volleyball Falls to Fairfield in SHU Invitational Championship
(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Women's Volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Fairfield Stags on Saturday afternoon in the2012 Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational championship game. The Stags outscored the Pioneers by scores of 26-24, 25-21, and 25-13.
Brianna Dixon led the way for Fairfield at the net with three blocks to go along with 11 kills en route to being named tournament MVP. Caitlin Stapleton led Fairfield with 12 kills, while Hayley Moyer led the squad with five blocks. Both join Dixon on the all-tournament team. Alissa Young (La Verne, CA) made the all-tournament team for SHU, totaling eight kills on the day. Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, PR) also earnd all-tournament team recognition with eight digs in the game. Elisa Scudder of Dartmouth and Evija Vilde of Central Florida round out the all-tournament team.
The first set was highly contested back-and-forth battle, with seven ties and two lead changes. Down 2-15, the Pioneers came back with five unanswered points to tie the set at 20. Natalie Kridel kept the set alive with a kill to know it at 24, but the Stags closed it out with kills by Moyer and Nicole Marzik.
The Stags closed out the second set, also a close affair with four ties and three lead changes, behind a 4-1 run and cruised through a third set that included a 12-2 run.
Karly Shockey (Chino Hills, CA) led SHU with 10 kills, the only Pioneer to reach double figures.
The Pioneers travel to West Point on September 14 for the Black Knight Invitational.
