Pioneers Downed by Red Flash in Three Sets

Loretto, Penn.—A pair of rookies led the Pioneer offense. Karly Shockey (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Allison Riggs (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded eight kills each as the Sacred Heart women's Volleyball Team was swept by the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash.

The teams exchanged points early in the first set before two three-point runs gave the Red Flash a five-point lead, 9-4, which the Pioneers could not catch. Riggs hit .600 in the set with three kills, but SFU went up 1-0 in the match with the 25-17 win.

Sacred Heart played close in the second set, always remaining within two points of Saint Francis (PA), but with the score at 12-10, the Red Flash went on a brief run to give them a five-point lead that they carried through to the break, winning the set 20-25.

The third set was a battle as the score tied on eight occasions. Sacred Heart claimed its first lead of the match, as well. The score was tied at 10 in the middle of Shockey's brief service run, when a Red Flash ball-handling error gave the Pioneers the advantage. SHU maintained the lead for the next couple points, but Saint Francis (PA) got back the lead with a five-point run. The Pioneers fought their way back, tying the score again at 23. A SHU attack error put the Red Flash at match-point and forced Head Coach Rob Machan to use a time out. The break did not faze SFU. Elizabeth Williams and Amanda Zahumensky blocked Shockey's attack to win the set 25-23.

The Pioneers wrap up the 2012 season at home on Saturday against the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Senior Night at 5:00 p.m.
