FAIRFIELD, CONN. (September 30, 2013)--Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) of the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team got the nods as Molten/Northeast Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. This is Mercado's second Player of the Week award this season, while this marks the first NEC weekly award for Krufka.
Mercado's consistent play helped Sacred Heart open the conference slate 2-0, sweeping Saint Francis U (3-0) and Robert Morris (3-0), both NEC Tournament participants a year ago. Mercado posted 24 kills, averaging 4.00 kills per set, while hitting .355 in the two matches. A former libero, Mercado sprawled for 28 digs or 4.83 per set. Against Robert Morris, Mercado registered a team-high 14 kills and 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Krufka averaged 4.33 kills per set over the weekend, including 16 kills and .464 attack percentage in a 3-0 triumph over Saint Francis U on Saturday. For the weekend, Krufka hit .293 while adding 15 digs and five block assists. Sacred Heart went 2-0 at home, also defeating Robert Morris (3-0) on Sunday.
The Pioneers hit the road this weekend facing Bryant on Saturday and Central Connecticut State on Sunday.
