Women's Volleyball Sweeps Bryant on Senior Day
FAIRFIELD, CONN. (November 10, 2013)—Marie Zimmerman (Denver, Colo.) posted an errorless match Saturday afternoon recording a team-leading 10 of her 15 attacks for kills. Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Calif.) hit .409 without any errors on her Senior Day as the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team swept the Bryant Bulldogs to improve to 14-14 this season and 8-4 in Northeast Conference play.
The Pioneers started off strong in the opening set taking a 4-0 lead. They would dominate the remainder of the set never allowing Bryant to take a lead. The closest the Bulldogs came was a 13-13 tie before a three-point service run by Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Maragarita, Calif.) put SHU back on top 17-13. Sacred Heart went on to win 25-17 on Mercado's fourth kill of the set.
The second set opened with a five-point service run from Mercado that gave the Pioneers an early advantage. Bryant managed to fight its way back and tied the set at seven before taking the lead on a service ace by Claire Van Dyke. The Bulldogs took a two-point lead, but Sacred Heart held them at 10 as a Bryant bad set sparked a six-point service run from Ana Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), which featured back-to-back aces, to put SHU up 15-10. Sacred Heart held the Bulldogs to just six more points in the set and took a 2-0 match lead with the 25-16 win. Zimmerman went 5-for-6 in the set to lead all players hitting .833.
Sacred Heart controlled the third set. After dropping the first point, the Pioneers rebounded taking the next four for a lead they never relinquished on the way to clinching the match with the 25-14 win. Mercado led the set with three kills, while Kiki Robinson (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Zimmerman both hit .500.
The Pioneers head out to western Pennsylvania next weekend to face conference foes Robert Morris and Saint Francis before heading to the NEC Championship the following weekend.
