(November 16, 2013)—Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led all player with 13 kills Saturday afternoon as the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team dropped the match to Robert Morris in three straight sets. Errors hurt the Pioneers' chance of winning the match. Despite outhitting the Colonials 47 kills to 38, SHU had 36 total errors compared to RMU's 18. Robert Morris took a quick 3-0 lead in the opener that the Pioneers could not recover from. Marie Zimmerman (Denver, Colo.) led the set with five kills. The freshman posted an errorless game hitting .625 (5-8) as Sacred Heart fell 25-18.
The second set started just like the prior with RMU taking the first three points. This time, however, the Pioneers fought their way back. After trailing for the whole set, Sacred Heart tied the game at 22 thanks to consecutive kills from Allison Riggs (Anaheim, Calif.), Krufka, who led all players with five kills, and Zimmerman forcing the Colonials to take a timeout. Robert Morris took the next point, but SHU rebounded with another Krufka kill to knot the score at 23, but RMU took the final two points claiming the set 25-23. Sophomore Karly Shockey (Chino Hills, Calif.) went four-for-six in the set without posting a single error.
The teams traded opening points of the third set. With the score tied at one, Robert Morris took the next three points to take the lead for the final time. The Colonials rode that lead all the way to the 25-23 win. Krufka, Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Jene Lee (San Dimas, Calif.) hit a set leading four kills, while Mercado and Lee recorded an errorless game.
